Strategic Education for Success.
I was accepted into 88 colleges when I sent out my applications in 2019 when I graduated from high school. I chose Northwood Tech to support my family and stay close to my siblings while still being able to progress toward my educational and career goals. I appreciated that our school was close by and affordable without compromising a quality education. I graduated from the Criminal Justice and Finance programs from our college and am currently working towards my Business Management and Human Resource Management degrees. Northwood Tech allowed me to gain a firm understanding in this array of topics without breaking my budget. I chose the Human Resource Management and Business Management programs to aid in the development and growth of the small sustainable fashion business that I started at just 19-years-old. As a result of the coursework, I have taken from our college and the network I have developed from our instructors and extra-curricular opportunities, I am on track to surpass six figures of profit in 2024. Once I complete my undergraduate coursework, I plan to attend law school to practice corporate financial law, which is why I sought out the Criminal Justice and Finance programs with Northwood Tech.
Thriving in Business and Leadership
I am a very involved and well-rounded individual. I work full-time at Thrivent Financial as a Financial Analyst in the suitability department. I also have owned and operated my small business for the past three years and am in the process of hiring two part-time employees. I am honored to serve as the Wisconsin State President for Business Professionals of America, the Northwood Tech Chapter President for Business Professionals of America, the Northwood Tech Student Body President for the New Richmond Campus, and the New Richmond representative as our school moves toward a one-college model. I competed at the National Leadership Conference in April 2023 for Business Professionals of America, where more than 7,000 individuals were in attendance. There, I earned 1st place in Entrepreneurship, 1st place in Interview Skills, and 2nd Place in Contemporary Issues. I was also a scholarship recipient and earned my Ambassador Torch Award, which is the highest level of honor within the organization. I am also very involved with volunteer work. I enjoy doing military care packages, visiting residents at nursing homes, doing letter exchanges with the elderly through the postal mail, and I tutor high school students for their ACT exam. My biggest hobby is reading. I love reading almost all genres of books and have read 124 books so far year to date.
A Driven and Ambitious Achiever.
I graduated from Amery High School in 2019. I earned two career technical education (CTE) specialty diplomas in Family Consumer Science and Business. I also earned two Youth Apprenticeship certifications in Hospitality, Lodging, and Tourism; and finance. I was a local officer for FCCLA, a national qualifier at the FCCLA State Leadership Conference and served as the regional representative for state conferences. I attended Northwood Technical College immediately after high school and earned my Associate of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice in May 2022 and my Associate of Applied Science degree in Finance in May 2023. I am currently studying Human Resource Management and Business Management with an emphasis in Marketing at Northwood Technical College. I am simultaneously attending University of Wisconsin – River Falls where I am studying Communication and Finance on a pre-law track. I plan to finish my studies at Northwood Tech and UWRF in the spring of 2026 and will attend the University of Minnesota for law school in the fall of 2026.
Inspirational Career Aspirations.
After I graduate from law school, I plan to gain employment as a corporate financial lawyer with Thrivent Financial. I also aspire to work at Northwood Tech or a similar college as an instructor in the finance department part-time while working in the legal field. I am also working to scale my business so that I can continue growing and developing my company without needing to be there every day, so I aspire to have a full team of about 20-25 individuals working out of our office in North Oaks, MN. I have been working on my first book regarding habits, motivation, and discipline for the past six months and will plan to submit it to publishers in the summer of 2025 to begin my career as an author as well.

University Transfer Degree (AS)
A New Beginning
A good friend in my hometown attended Northwood Tech, and he recommended it to me. I have always had a passion for the Sciences; and I wanted a chance to learn new skills. My advisor helped me to choose the University Transfer Degree program and inspired me to believe in myself. I wanted to learn about mathematics that I had not tried before, so I could advance in a new career path.
Multifaceted Artistry in Motion
I play in the Northland College community Jazz Band this semester as their drummer. I also perform and create my own original musical pieces. I had my artwork exhibited at the Black Cat Coffee House in Ashland in October and November.
I am a multi-talented musician and artist that has recorded and released three studio albums. Because of this, I have become regionally well-known, and even have a following of international fans and listeners from many countries.
A Versatile Skill Set.
I have worked 16 different jobs since I was 15 years old. Many of the local businesses have employed me at one point. Mostly retail jobs, but I have also been a landscaper, electrician, and worked at our local hospital as a kitchen staff member. I currently work at the Ashland Baking Company in the kitchen.
Exploring Career Possibilities
I plan to study Chemistry and Anatomy, and hopefully find a path into the medical field. I want to learn more about languages and cultures, as well. I have many interests, but I am not sure which career is ideal for me at this point. With the time I invest in Northwoods Tech, I hope to find a career that fulfills my interests, but also is financially viable for a better future!

Associate Degree, Nursing Program
A Purposeful Journey.
When I was younger, just out of high school, I attended a four-year private college. That experience ended without me completing a degree and accruing significant debt. The experience also left me feeling discouraged from trying again for many years. When I decided to finish a degree, I wanted to find a school that would help me feel welcomed and supported and answer my questions honestly. I previously attended college for nursing and worked in the healthcare field in many different roles. I had been a certified nursing assistant for several years, then transitioned to working with the mentally ill in a community setting. While working in this role, I helped people with severe and persistent mental illness have a fulfilling life in a home setting. This work was very fulfilling. As I worked in this field, I began to be promoted and take on more responsibilities related to a business. I eventually worked my way to the behavior analyst position by completing several thousand hours in the field and online training. In this role, I would create plans for staff to read and learn what specific responses to behaviors could be used to help care for our residents. This role was fulfilling, but I only worked directly with residents daily. When the pandemic started, and I began working from home, I felt disconnected from residents, and after seeing on the news how hard nurses were working amid a global emergency. It inspired me to renew my goal of becoming a nurse.
Pursuing Passions Amid Responsibilities.
My hobbies while attending school and working are limited, but I enjoy lifting weights, ice skating, fishing, and many outdoor activities. I am also the current nursing club president and participate in CAB activities as I am able. I also assist with my children's sports activities, helping with football, wrestling, and baseball. Before starting school, I had volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club but have yet to continue due to time restraints.
A Pathway to Caregiving.
While in high school, I worked at a nursing home in rural Wisconsin for three years. Then, following graduation, I worked for an assisted living company in Proctor, Minnesota. Following this, I worked for an Alzheimer's unit, eventually transferring to a unit at the Benedictine Health Center, continuing my work with Alzheimer's partners. Following this, I took a job with a group home company specializing in working with the mentally ill and providing a community and home-like setting following initial stays. I was promoted to Behavior analyst after meeting the minimum hour requirement and required training through UMD. In this role, I collected data on client behaviors and personal observations from meetings with the residents. I then designed behavior strategies and procedures for staff to help deal with challenging behaviors. I am now working part-time for the same company while I finish my nursing degree and have been offered an LPN position for the summer before my final semester.
A Worthwhile Future.
My long-term goal is to complete my two-year associate nursing degree at Northwood Tech, begin working in the mental health field with my nursing degree, and eventually my bachelor's degree, and ultimately continue and get a master's work in the behavioral health department with psychiatrists helping the mentally ill in ways I haven't been able to thus far.

Growth and Empowerment.
I am attending the technical college through a retraining program. I am a displaced employee after a workplace injury that resulted in a partial disability. Northwood is the most convenient for my family and me. I knew that returning to school, I wanted it to be in a smaller, friendlier environment. I chose my program mainly because I wanted to be a better leader than I was led by. I want to be a part of helping personal growth and helping someone reach their greatest potential.
Balancing Family and Leadership.
I used to enjoy many outdoor activities with my children. I am learning my new hobbies as I learn more about my disability. Currently, I hold an officer position on the Student Senate as Secretary. I am an active member of CAB. I attended a leadership retreat in WI Dells this semester and look forward to the next one in January.
Independence and Education.
I attended Cumberland High School until the 10th grade, when I left school to become independent and start living my life. I supported myself for many years. I found a job that I truly loved, and it required me to have my H.S. diploma. I received my HSED when I was 30 years old. I remained with that employer until April of 2023. I am now enrolled in my first semester of college.
Future Goals.
I aim to attain my degree and look for a rewarding career using what I have learned. I may have found my home in Northwood Tech. I want to be a part of people’s growth. I cannot wait to see what my future holds for me.

Maria Reyes
Associate Degree Nursing
At 15, Maria moved to the U.S. mainland from Puerto Rico.
Although Maria was a high achieving student in Puerto Rico, she knew only Spanish when she arrived, so language was a barrier. She eventually learned English through school and on her own with a dictionary.
Setting school aside.
At 17, Maria left high school to take care of her new baby. Ten years later she walked into Northwood Tech for her GED to create a better life for herself and her children.
From GED to nursing student.
With a community of support, Maria was able to complete the nursing program while holding down a job and taking care of her two boys.
Empowering herself and others.
Maria has now worked in the nursing field in various roles including as a nurse, a manager and as an instructor to others. She says caring for others has always come first for her ever since she helped take care of her grandmother when she was young.
Jeff Engelbretson
Management and Leadership
The right fit.
Jeff got a flyer from Northwood Tech after deploying to Iraq and thought he'd check out the Management and Leadership program. After hitting it off with his instructor and taking his first class with other working adult students, he knew it was the right fit.
Classes around his schedule.
The evening classes allowed Jeff to be active in the Army National Guard and a part-time student, taking one class per semester on average with his military tuition assistance.
Starting a new life.
Jeff spent 25 years in the military before retiring and taking on his new career. He says the people skills and learning how to create a good working environment were the most helpful in his transition to civilian-life management.
A strong foundation.
Within two years of working at Verizon, Jeff was promoted to management where he managed three staging facilities and about 30 employees throughout the Midwest. He also was able to transfer all of his Northwood Tech credits to continue his education and obtain a bachelor's degree.
Amber Popplewell
Human Services Associate
Amber was a single mother who wanted to further her education.
Although Amber wasn't sure what career she wanted to pursue, she was sure that she wanted to do something important and she wanted to help people.
The support needed to succeed.
The staff were always supportive to Amber and her daughter as they spent many evenings studying in Northwood Tech's Learning Resource Center.
Paying it forward.
Amber felt passionate to apply her education to the community she was living, so in addition to working and taking classes, Amber also volunteered for the Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse.
Making a difference in the lives of others.
Amber is now a program coordinator in the sexual assault program at the Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse. She looks back on her time at Northwood Tech as a fantastic, accelerated program.
Chet Banger
Architectural Commercial Design
Exploring his options.
Chet had several jobs, tried a university and community college and was in the military before landing at Northwood Tech, using his military tuition assistance.
Help from a career survey.
He decided on the architecture program after taking the career survey online. He had taken AutoCAD (2D drafting software) classes in high school and had a construction background, so the program was relevant to his interests and past experiences.
Networking opportunities.
Chet met what would soon be his employer through a class assignment to interview an architect, which led to an internship that turned into a full-time job.
The skills for success.
Chet helped lead the firm's transition to Revit (a new 3D drafting software), and helped teach others how to use the software. One of Chet's first major projects was a bank in River Falls. He credits his drafting skills and construction knowledge for helping him launch his career.
