The Power Sports industry not only offers rewarding careers but also is fun, challenging and exciting. After all, who wouldn’t like to work on and around motorcycles, boats, personal watercraft, ATVs, UTVs, race quads, snowmobiles and outdoor power equipment? Just a few of the exciting jobs are technician (mechanic), sales, parts, service, management, owner and working for one of the major manufacturers.

Program Overview

The Power Sports Technician program will give you the hands-on experience needed to be successful in this field. Dealerships, repair shops, marinas and industry manufacturers desperately need entry-level people in their field. Power Sports is not only a career, it is a lifestyle.

Academics

Through program theory classes, related applied classes and lab experience you will learn the how-to and why's of servicing the latest equipment. Along the way, you will gain confidence and experience leading to a fun and rewarding career in the Power Sports industry.  

Critical-Thinking Skills

You will learn to look at the whole picture and develop analytical skills to systematically diagnose mechanical issues using your training and up to date equipment. 

Customer Relations Skills

Working with other students on coursework and in the lab creates the higher level of learning and workplace cohesiveness industry seeks. Working with real customers will improve your communication skills in person and on the phone. Students also work with parts departments and warehouses.  

Club Activities

Students will have the opportunity to be involved with civic and school activities through student government. Students also may compete in both state and national competitions in their area of study in Skills USA and become certified thru the National Equipment and Engine Training Council. 


Required Courses

This program will provide you with hands-on experience in a lab designed to be as much like real-life experience as possible. Students learn about and troubleshoot various types of recreational equipment including lawn & garden equipment, motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and marine.

This course provides the theory necessary to understand and troubleshoot the components and systems unique to motorcycles. Theory is given in the specialty areas of carburetion, fuel injection, ignition, transmissions, clutches, and running gear. You will learn to apply basic techniques and procedures of motorcycle engine service and repair. This is a lecture- and lab-based course. Specialty areas dealing with transmissions and chassis on these units are covered with practical hands-on experience. PREREQUISITES: 31461302 Engine and Chassis Repair 2, 31461335 Gas and Diesel Engine Theory, and COREQUISITE: 31461343 ATV Service.

Theory will be given in the specialty areas of fuel systems, ignition systems, cooling systems, lubrication systems, and gear cases. You learn to apply basic troubleshooting techniques and repair procedures of marine engine service and repair to marine engines with emphasis on practical hands-on experience. PREREQUISITES: 31461302 Engine and Chassis Repair 2 and 31461335 Gas and Diesel Engine Theory.

Upon completion of this program, you will earn technical diplomas in Outdoor Power Equipment Technician (marketed using the title: Power Sports Technician) and Small Engine Repair Specialist, along with technical certificates in Motorcycle Service & ATV and Marine Service.
