Business managers are found in a wide variety of settings in virtually every sector the economy. To make sound business decisions, you need a broad-based background in supervision, leadership, marketing, human resources, finance, law, planning, business technology, communication, math, accounting and budgeting. 

Program Overview

In the Business Management program, you will develop skills for employment in a variety of business settings or prepare to operate a business of your own. Careers can be found in hospitality, sales, technology, retail, manufacturing and financial services. While at Northwood Tech, you will learn to plan and implement business strategies. You will have the opportunity to specialize in general business or marketing. A field study experience allows you to practice skills in a real-world business environment.

Academics

Classes are offered at the Ashland, New Richmond, Rice Lake and Superior campuses. Select courses are available at the Outreach Centers in Balsam Lake, Hayward and Ladysmith. You can take classes in various instruction types including Online, Your Choice or On Site.

Required Courses

You will experience a variety of business topics to find your unique niche. Emphasis areas are offered in general business or marketing. The general business track explores human resources, project management, entrepreneurship and strategic planning. The marketing emphasis features professional selling, graphic design and social media marketing. Software classes allow you to build skills in word processing, spreadsheets and presentation graphics.

Included are research methods and identification of the resources to create, develop, and implement solutions to problems. Students will also develop appropriate strategies to initiate or maintain a small business.

This course follows social media’s transformation of advertising from a mass medium to one-to-one communication with immediate feedback. Social media’s use for public relations and advertising as well as how to create and deploy a social media campaign will be the main focus of the course. The history and development of social media platforms will be examined as well as today’s ethical and legal implications of social media efforts.

This course will allow the student to analyze what specific occupational field(s) they are best suited for. Included will be an in-depth self-analysis, simulated job application and interviews, a career research report, and work-based experience(s).
