CDL Class B Classes

Courses prepare you to obtain a Wisconsin Class B Commercial Driver's License. Behind-the-wheel classes are hands-on and offer a flexible schedule.


About the Courses

Through the CDL Class B training you will learn: 

  • Equipment fundamentals for the commercial trucking industry 
  • Basic knowledge and driving skills to pass the commercial driver’s license exam  
  • Rules of the road and smart driving strategies 

CDL B License – Behind-the-Wheel: Professional drivers are responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of goods. This course will prepare you for that through a driving simulator and behind-the-wheel activities. The course includes an introduction to the industry, vehicle inspections and systems overview, safe driving techniques, cargo documentation and employer/employee relations. The Class B license does not allow a driver to operate tractor-trailers or other combination vehicles. A student must have their Class B permit before starting this course. 

Additional fees and prerequisites: 

  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. 
  • Must have a valid CDL class B permit 8 days prior to Behind the Wheel.
  • Must pass a DOT physical exam and drug test from a certified provider.
  • Must be able to read and speak English well enough to perform all truck driver duties.
  • Must be at least 18 years old; 21 if you plan to drive interstate routes.
  • Completion of Truck Driving Theory required. This 40 hour course is available Online and on demand.
  • The CDL Class B road test can be taken at Northwood Tech-Rice Lake with Northwood Tech's vehicle. Cost is $150 (fees subject to change). 

CDL Class B Road Test: The Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B Road Test will be conducted by a third party examiner, and will include the same CDL pre-trip and driving skills test as provided by DMV examiners. Prerequisite: In order to register for this CDL Class B Road Test, you must have your CDL permit and have successfully completed the CDL Class B Behind the Wheel course. Once you register and pay for this Road Test, you will be scheduled to take the test for your "B" Endorsement. Students must talk to the instructor for more information and to schedule the test date and time. Note: We do not provide passenger or school bus testing.

 

Northwood Technical College is a registered training provider in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Training Provider Registry (TPR). We provide theory, range, and behind-the-wheel training which meets new Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations.
