Beginning in 2022, the accrediting body (AVMA-CVTEA) for all veterinary technician programs revised safety standards to include the following: “Safety of students, program personnel, and animals must be of prime consideration. Students must be educated on rabies risk prior to working with animals. Prior to live animal use, students must be vaccinated against rabies…” Students are encouraged to reach out to their primary healthcare providers and insurance companies to determine if their insurance will cover the prophylactic, 2-dose rabies protocol as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
