Biography
My education and career in medicine have provided me with a wealth of experiences I can use as examples to teach students how they will use their own education in a real-world setting. I have an MD so I know from a physician's perspective what is expected of a medical assistant and why. I also worked as a medical assistant myself including more than five years as the supervisor of all the medical assistants in urgent care. The urgent care was a unique place to learn because I saw a wide spectrum of illnesses and injuries while even having the opportunity to assist in minor surgical procedures. I hired, trained and managed the medical assistant team so I can now apply the same type of instruction in the classroom.
Students are given personal attention in the Northwood Tech Certified Medical Assistant program. We help students experience success. Becoming a certified medical assistant allows you to take your trade anywhere in the country. If life changes and you need to move, you will be able to find employment wherever you go. There are always jobs in healthcare even in a down economy. You can work at a clinic with hours that are Monday through Friday with holidays off which is not always the case with other healthcare professions like nursing. This allows for more leisure activities and family time. Also, working directly with a doctor is very educational and rewarding. You get direct contact with patients and play a large part in giving them a positive experience during their visit.
My teaching philosophy is centered on providing practical real-world examples for every subject we are studying. In my opinion, the best way to retain information is not in rote memorization but by knowing why or how something works. I help my students imagine multiple scenarios for how the curriculum will be applied to their careers in the medical field. My goal is to help them understand a medical concept so well that they will be able to teach it to their colleagues in the future.
My mother is a retired elementary school teacher and I also have the passion for teaching. I enjoy helping students gain confidence to apply what they have learned. I find it very rewarding to share knowledge with others. Especially because I hope they will, in turn, share it with their future colleagues and have a positive impact on their future workplace. Seeing my students go on to have successful careers is incredibly fulfilling.
I love spending time with my wife and two young children. My wife and I like to work on home improvement projects together in our more than 100-year-old house. I am an avid genealogist who has searched for countless hours to figure out my family tree. I have a passion for genetic genealogy and help others understand their genetic genealogy test results as an administrator for a few online groups.
