“The ability to communicate effectively and ethically often accounts for the difference between success and failure. It is a skill and a mindset that is not just highly sought after in the professional world, but in all aspects of our lives including relationships and citizenship. General studies courses in communication prepare students to see themselves as important parts of complex communities and to make choices that strengthen those communities.”

Biography
As Anthony Howe studied politics in college, he found that he was most interested in how people enacted their citizenship with language, a philosophy introduced by Aristotle who believed that because people have the capacity to speak and use language to create and describe reality, we tend to associate with other people.
After earning his bachelor’s degree, Anthony continued his education, this time studying rhetoric. While working on his master’s degree in rhetoric, he taught sections of first-year composition and writing and culture. After earning his master’s, Anthony was hired to run New Richmond’s Writing Lab until he was offered his current position as a communications instructor.
Most of Anthony’s education has encouraged him to think about how people interact with each other, especially through our ability to communicate. His classes revolve precisely around the idea that our ability to communicate both draws us to others, but also encumbers us with important responsibilities to use this ability both effectively and ethically.
Anthony’s goal as an instructor is to foster a classroom environment where students feel comfortable sharing their unique experiences. This openness in the classroom provides an opportunity for students to discover the benefits of discourse in situations where diverse backgrounds and experiences are present.
In his spare time, Anthony enjoys spending time with his wife, Sarah, and his dog, Sonia Sotomayor (Soto, for short). He is a professional and competitive bagpiper and has played for nearly two decades. He also spends a lot of time outside canoeing, cutting wood, fishing and admiring his surroundings. Additionally, Anthony is a lover of food, and he enjoys cooking and eating locally and around the world.
