Tessa Carlstrom’s Path to Phlebotomy: Dedication and Hands-On Learning at Northwood Tech

February 10, 2025

Tessa Carlstrom’s journey at Northwood Tech highlights her dedication to hands-on learning, the impact of small class sizes, and her commitment to balancing work and education as she pursues a career in phlebotomy.

As Northwood Technical College celebrates Phlebotomists Recognition Week, we shine a spotlight on Tessa Carlstrom, a dedicated phlebotomy student from Birchwood, Wisconsin. Tessa’s journey to Northwood Tech is a testament to perseverance, ambition and the power of hands-on learning in a supportive environment.

Finding Her Path

Before enrolling at Northwood Tech, Tessa worked as a bartender and waitress at a beloved local restaurant, saving money while exploring her career options. “I was trying to figure out what I wanted to pursue,” she said. “I still work there and don’t plan on leaving anytime soon!”

When she decided it was time to return to school, Tessa sought a phlebotomy program that offered small class sizes and hands-on experience. “I wanted a program that was affordable and would truly be worth my time and money,” she said. “Northwood Tech was the perfect fit.”

A Supportive Learning Environment

For Tessa, the close-knit classroom setting has been a highlight of her education. “My favorite part has been building relationships with my instructor and classmates,” she said. “Being in a class of only seven students allows for meaningful discussions and a more personalized learning experience. That connection truly enhances my education.”

Balancing work and school has been a challenge, but with understanding employers and strong organizational tools, she has found ways to manage her busy schedule. “Having flexible bosses helps immensely,” she said. “I also use planners and sticky notes to keep myself on track, and they serve as great little motivational reminders!”

Looking Ahead

Tessa is excited about the future and the opportunities her education will provide. “Once I complete my program, I’ll be able to immerse myself in the medical field and gain confidence in my career,” she said. “This is a big step toward a successful future.”

Reflecting on her journey, Tessa is most proud of her decision to return to school after nearly five years away. “When I first decided not to go to college, I worried that life might get in the way,” she said. “Now, I’m proving to myself that it’s never too late to pursue your goals.”

After graduation, she looks forward to celebrating her accomplishments and seeing where her classmates’ careers take them. She also credits Northwood Tech instructor Sher McGregor for playing an influential role in her journey. “Sher has been incredibly helpful, kind and personable,” Tessa said. “She always has great stories to tell, and I’m grateful to have her as a mentor.”

As she continues her studies, Tessa remains focused on her future, ready to make a difference in the medical field. Her story serves as an inspiration to others considering a career in phlebotomy and beyond.
