Serving Up Success: Emily's Path to a Career in Human Resources

September 26, 2024

Emily Maier, a dedicated Northwood Tech student, shares her inspiring journey from serving tables to pursuing her dream career in Human Resources. Her story highlights the impact of education, determination, and the support of Northwood Tech’s faculty and staff in transforming lives.

In celebration of Human Resources Professional Day, we’re proud to spotlight Emily Maier, a student in Northwood Tech’s Human Resource Management program. Emily’s journey exemplifies determination, resilience, and the transformative impact of education in building a rewarding career in HR.

A Journey of Growth and Determination

Emily’s path to becoming an HR professional began right after high school. She worked as a server at a small bistro for three years and convinced her manager to let her take on additional responsibilities as an administrative assistant. While saving money, she knew that Northwood Tech would be the place to make her HR dream a reality.

"I had a dream in mind and a plan to obtain it. I discovered HR in my freshman year of high school, and something just 'clicked.' That was it, that was what I was going to do," said Emily. "Coming from a difficult background, I knew my career path wouldn’t be the typical road taken, but I was determined."

In 2020, Emily completed the Business Administrative Professional certificate program at Northwood Tech, which helped her secure a position as an HR assistant. As her passion for HR grew, she knew it was time to return to Northwood to pursue an associate degree in Human Resource Management.

Balancing Work, Education, and Life

One of the things Emily appreciates most about Northwood Tech is the flexibility it provides. "I love the flexibility Northwood Tech offers with their online and 'your choice' options. At times, I have a chaotic work schedule, and it is relieving to know that I don’t have to sacrifice my performance or attendance at work to perform my best in my classes," Emily explained.

Emily’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Financial hardships and other barriers led to a temporary pause in her education, but Northwood Tech was there to support her. "I faced many barriers while pursuing my education and career. I received a personal call from the Dean at the time, who gave me the words of encouragement, 'If that is where you want to be, there is a way to get there.' I've been pummeling through barriers ever since," she said.

Support and Resources at Northwood Tech

Emily credits Northwood Tech’s academic advisors for providing guidance and support when she needed it most. "The academic advisors are so helpful in helping students navigate barriers they may face. Whether it be time management, financial, or other concerns, they have so many resources and lots of encouragement to offer," she shared.

Impacting Lives and Building Confidence

Emily’s education at Northwood Tech has already made a significant impact on her career and the lives of those around her. "My education at Northwood Tech has already offered me the most wonderful opportunities. After completing the Business Administrative Professional program, I went from HR Assistant at a lumber company, to HR & Operations at a construction company, obtained my aPHR certification, and now am a Regional HR Generalist at a global manufacturing company," she said.

"The HRM program that I am currently enrolled in has allowed me to better my service to my team, as well as given me a newfound confidence in areas that I was lacking prior. I am so excited for where my education journey will take me next."

Looking Ahead and Words of Gratitude

Emily is excited about her future, with plans to transfer her credits to UW River Falls to pursue a bachelor’s degree, followed by an MBA and SHRM certification. Her passion for learning and drive to succeed continue to inspire those around her. Throughout her journey, Emily has been supported by influential faculty, including Leah Holst. "Leah Holst! She does not just teach you concepts, she allows you to practice and learn how to apply those concepts in the real world. She knows when you can do something better and gives you the opportunity to improve," Emily shared.

She also expressed deep gratitude to the staff who supported her from the beginning. "Their words of encouragement kept me going and are the reason I continue to return to Northwood Tech."

On this Human Resources Professional Day, we celebrate Emily and all HR professionals making a positive impact in their workplaces and communities. Northwood Tech is proud to support students like Emily as they transform their futures through education.
