Pursuing a Passion: Northwood Technical College’s Veterinary Technician Program

October 17, 2024

Wren Laurence-Herr’s journey through Northwood Tech’s Vet Tech program has been a transformative experience, allowing her to turn a childhood dream into a promising career.

Rediscovering a Dream

Before joining Northwood Tech, Wren was working at a nonprofit organization. When COVID-19 hit, she was laid off due to budget cuts. She used it as an opportunity to reflect on what truly brought her joy. She rediscovered her childhood dream of working with animals and secured an internship working with wildlife. This eventually led to a job at an emergency veterinary clinic.

Choosing Northwood Tech

“Once I started working at the emergency clinic and started to gain skills, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to further my formal education so that I could become a credentialed veterinary technician,” Wren explained. After researching various technical schools, she was drawn to Northwood Tech due to the positive feedback from former students and the opportunity to attend in-person classes. She used her time on the waiting list to complete necessary general studies and pre-vet tech courses, began the program in Fall 2023, and never looked back.

A Supportive Community

One of Wren’s favorite aspects of Northwood Tech is the supportive community of instructors and classmates. As a non-traditional student, Wren had apprehensions about starting a new career and returning to school. The acceptance and support from her instructors and classmates helped her overcome those concerns. “The instructors and my classmates we’re all there for the same reason and it’s a wonderful feeling that we all share a passion of wanting to help animals,” she says. elected President of Northwood Tech’s Student Chapter of the National Association of Vet Techs in America (SCNAVTA). “It means the world to me that my classmates look to me as a leader. I look forward to…helping others learn and grow to the best of their abilities throughout the remainder of my time at Northwood Tech,” she shares.

Looking Ahead

After graduation, Wren is excited to continue her work in emergency veterinary medicine, with a particular interest in avian and exotic species. She is grateful for the entire vet tech faculty team, noting “Their collective experience, knowledge, and passion for veterinary medicine is unmatched and I truly don’t think I could have found a better group of instructors anywhere else.”

Reflecting on her journey, Wren feels the opportunities provided by Northwood Tech are endless. The program has equipped her with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in veterinary medicine and has opened doors to various career paths.

For anyone considering a career in veterinary medicine, Northwood Technical College provides a nurturing and adaptable learning environment designed to help students reach their full potential and succeed in their chosen careers.
