Building a Future: Samantha’s Journey Through Northwood Technical College’s Substance Abuse Education Program
September 19, 2024
After taking over a decade off school, Samantha found herself ready to finish what she started. As a woman in recovery, she felt a strong desire to give back and help others. This led her to the Substance Abuse Education program at Northwood Technical College. “The program has been a perfect place to start building a meaningful future for myself and my family,” says Samantha.
Flexibility and Accessibility
One of the standout features of the program for Samantha was its flexibility. The classes are designed to accommodate various schedules, offering both in-person and online options. This flexibility is crucial for her as she balances work from home and caring for her young children. The proximity of the campus also allows her to drive in when necessary, making it a convenient choice.
Aligning with Professional Goals
Samantha finds the program incredibly beneficial for her current work as a peer support specialist with Lutheran Social Services and as an advocate at a sexual and domestic violence shelter. It directly supports her roles, providing her with the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively with people. Looking towards her future, Samantha says “I would like to work directly with families in navigating the CPS system to reunify with their children.” She acknowledges that furthering her education is essential for understanding others and gaining a better understanding of herself.

Encouragement and Recommendations
Samantha’s decision to enroll was significantly influenced by friends who had graduated from the program. They spoke highly of their experiences and the support they received from the faculty. Their positive feedback and encouragement played a pivotal role in her decision to join the program.
Gaining Connections and Resources
The program has already provided Samantha with invaluable connections and resources. She highlights the benefit of hearing from speakers who have graduated from the program, gaining insights into further education and career opportunities in the human services field. The wealth of information and networking opportunities available to students is something she deeply appreciates.
Endless Opportunities
Reflecting on her journey so far, Samantha feels that the opportunities provided by the Substance Abuse Education program at Northwood Technical College are endless. The program not only equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge but also opens doors to various career paths in the human services field.
For anyone considering a career in substance abuse education or looking to make a meaningful impact in their community, Northwood Technical College offers a supportive and flexible environment to help you achieve your goals.
