A Journey of Resilience and Triumph
June 17, 2024
From School Bus Driver to Accounting Student
Cassi Hanson's journey to Northwood Technical College was anything but ordinary. As a single mother of two boys, she faced the daunting task of balancing family responsibilities, work, and education. But she was determined to pursue her dreams, even after a 16-year hiatus from formal education.
A Leap of Faith
Cassi's decision to attend Northwood Tech was spontaneous. While preparing for a family trip over the summer, she decided: "I think I'm going to sign up for accounting classes!" With phone in hand, she filled out the application and, within a couple of weeks, found herself starting classes in August. It was a whirlwind decision that changed her life forever.
The Warm Embrace of Community
Cassi's favorite thing about Northwood Tech is the sense of community: "It feels like you're walking into the Cheers bar; everybody here knows your name. Whether it's Debbie at the front or Mary in Student Services or Stephanie in Veterans Services calling out to say, 'Hi Cassi!'… everybody is so friendly and welcoming."
Overcoming Barriers
Cassi faced significant challenges as a single mother. Balancing work, family life, and her children's activities while pursuing her education was no small feat. Her son's mild form of Autism required extra care, adding to the complexity. Yet, Cassi persevered. She utilized the Balsam Lake Outreach Center, sought guidance from Academic Coaches, and leaned on Steve Dus (Dean of Students) for support. The staff at Northwood Tech provided unwavering support, helping her navigate the stressors of life and academia.
Pride and Accomplishments
Cassi's friendly attitude and infectious spirit quickly earned the admiration of students and staff. On top of participating in work-study programs, she became an active member of the Student Senate and Northwood Tech Alliance for Pride. However, when asked what aspect of her journey she was most proud of, she put academics first: "Being able to graduate with honors, because in high school I was a very below-average student. After 16 years, I'm able to put my priorities straight! Being inducted into Phi Theta Kappa (honors society) my second semester was a big accomplishment as well."
A New Chapter
Cassi's education opened doors to better opportunities and a new future. She recently started her new job in the Revenue Audit Department at St. Croix Casinos, a job offer she accepted before graduating this spring. And there's more—a wedding with Ryan Knutson this summer adds to the excitement.
Cassi’s story exemplifies resilience, community, and the transformative power of education.
