Medical laboratory technicians work behind-the-scenes to perform medical laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Medical laboratory technicians use a variety of technology, instrumentation, and manual procedures to collect, process, and analyze biological specimens.
Program Overview
At career entry, the medical laboratory technician will be able to collect, process, and analyze blood and body fluids by performing routine clinical laboratory tests in the areas of hematology, clinical chemistry, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, and urinalysis. Medical laboratory technicians are highly specialized healthcare professionals that use state-of-the-art equipment to provide laboratory test results to physicians that aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. As an essential member of the healthcare team, Medical laboratory technicians work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, and research laboratories.
Program Outcomes
Medical Laboratory Technician graduates will be able to:

Academics
Medical Laboratory Technician is a two-year program at the New Richmond campus. Students have the option to complete some general education coursework in the summer between their first and second year.

Westfields Hospital & Clinic is proud to announce an exciting scholarship opportunity for Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) students. This scholarship would award tuition, book, and fee assistance. In exchange and upon completion of the program, the student is encouraged to work for HealthPartners for at least one year.
Location will be the student’s choice and based on current openings.

This program is seeking accreditation by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, 5600 N. River Rd., Suite 720, Rosemont, IL 60018-5119, phone 773-714-8880.
Graduates may be eligible to take a national certification exam through the American Society for Clinical Pathologists’ (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC).
The Medical Laboratory Technician program is supported with $200,000 in WTCS Grant Funds.
